The Giver (4)

In Jonas's community, "everything" is the same. Every person has the same experiences at the same time while growing up. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works only for the common good. What advantages might "Sameness" yield for contemporary communities? Would there be any benefit to "Sameness" in our society? Is the loss of diversity worth it?

  1. In a community "Sameness" can be good. Like the fact that no one is better than another. An advantage to that is no one would feel a sense of worthlessness when being compared to another person. There is only a few benefits that "Sameness" would add to our community, one being no one feeling bad about themselves and starting to to do bad things that can endanger their lives. If communities had "Sameness" the loss of diversity would be devastating to most people. All people are unique and need to be proud of that fact.

  2. I agree with Courtney, "sameness" can be a disadvantage, yet a world with peace, with no jealousy, and no competition sounds very inviting. The loss of diversity seems like too much to lose, the loss of love even more. Diversity is what our teachers, parents, and peers encourage us to embrace. I wonder what it would be like to not see diversity in colors, or hear it in sounds?

  3. Sameness in our society would help since no one would argue about different things. This meaning no war or famine or jealousy. But there's still much to be lost in our society if sameness happens the uniqueness of everyone would be lost, no snow or different kinds of weather. So in the end it is obvious that diversity loss is not worth it.

  4. "Sameness" in our society would be much easier. It would be convenient to have a world with no famine, war, or jealousy. Nothing to worry about. However, the lack of diversity makes me think that it would not be worth it. Everyone is different, and that's how It should be.

  5. If sameness is good, than most people playing vilontly, not knowing about love or sunshine or pain or truth in there lives is good.

  6. Some advantages of have everything the same is you don't have to worry about anyone doing anything wrong or different because they don't know about anything else so always will follow the rules. I don't think it would be to our benefit if everything in our community would have "sameness" because we are all so different and diverse that we know we are not all same and that there is something out there different. So I don't think it would be to our benefit for our society. I think that loss of diversity would not be worth it Because then we would all be the same and not have a meaning in life and I believe that everyone has a meaning in life. So it would make having a society worthless.

  7. I disagree with Jamie I think you need some competition to teach you and to motivate you. competition helps you get better at stuff, it makes you work harder and makes you better. Most kids would not live up to their full potential with out some competition.

  8. I agree and disagree with Sayed. Competition is good for kids and can develop their confidence but it also turns people against eachother. I say that beacause a lot of people I know have lost friends from competition. Competition can sometimes bring out people's bad side and the result is lose of friends.

  9. I agree with Sayed. Competition is motivating. Without competition people would not be very physically fit because exercising and sports would not be practiced as much as it is in our society. However if the competition is unhealthy, it can lead to situations like feelings of failure or even war.

I agree with sameness in our comunity would be good, but with everyone and everything the same how can people express their individuality as a person. Although diversity has cause many problems for the human race it has also shaped our history, goverment, and the world. Without people being different we would not have as many problems, but how would we know who we are? That is why I disagree to sameness being good in our society.

I agree with Kate P. If our society was always the same we wouldn't have to worry about anyone doing anything wrong but I also agree when she says we would all lose our diversity. I think that having no one in the world being the same is one of the best things that has ever happened. If all of us were the same we would have absolutely no remote possibility to express ourselves.

  12. The only advantages I can hink of about sameness are that there wouldn't be any criticism, and without criticism there wouldn't be racists. I don't think sameness would work well in our society, becuase with sameness there wouldn't be music, there wouldn't be as much fun things to do everyday. Plus the loss of diversity would be hard. Diversity is a rite everyone shares.

  13. I agree with Sayed and Courtney, I think kids need to have competetion to strive and do well in certain areas. I think that with sameness there are many problems. For example, after your kids have kids you do not see them anymore and no one knows who their aunts and uncles are or their grandparents or their cousins. Also, you barely have any choices. No clothing choices, no hair style choices, no job choices, etc.

I agree that sameness can be good and bad. The advantages are that the society is ordered so their government is easier to run. Another advantage is that people will be treated equally since there are strict rules. A disadvantage is that you don't get to pick who you are or what you will do with your life when you grow up because your life will be planned out for you already.

  15. I agree with Nathan, sameness would help our society. If there was sameness in our society, there would be no starvation or war. There would be nothing to worry about. But if there were sameness in our society, there would be no color or seasons, and everything would always be the same. People would lose their uniqueness and differences. Diversity loss would not be worth all of the other losses.

  16. I disagree with Conner since sameness could help more than the lack of criticism. Even though I agree about the part of the part of diversity it would be more peaceful without difference, therefore no wars.

I didn't thoroughly read through all of the comments but i think there are a few positive affects of sameness, but over all, most affects are negative. Sure there may be a sense of control and security, but you never get to be unique or special. The way i see it, if you have to live in a world of sameness, you might as well live in a world of clones with hardly any feelings or individuality.

  18. Sameness would have the benefit of not having to be hired or cooking your own meals, yet you don't get to keep your own child or have an individual birthday, or even see color you don't get individual toys or get to have your personality be reflected off your clothes and hairstyle so as you can see there are very little benefits.

  19. Everyone has a meaning in life and with sameness you may be able to accomplish what you born to do but its not as fun and spontaneous as it would be here in reality, if you couldn't live you dream of ,for example, being an artist because you couldn't see color, well yeah there would be grey and black but thats not as fun and spontaneous as blue, lime green, and orange.

  20. I have to agree with Joe. Sameness would be a wonderfull fix to our wars and arguements; but then we would not know about others being different,or pain and sorrow.

  21. I agree with Emily. Sameness in a society would have a few advantages including no war, hurt feelings or jealously. Although this would be great nobody wants to lose there individuality. In Jonas's world they wake up and live the life there supposed to live. They don't get to do anything that they would want to do or make any choices. This would be devastating to our world. Although I don't like war or hurt feelings, a world of no feelings would be terrible. I believe that a world of sameness is not worth the loss of diversity.

  22. As Alexa said people need to have some sort of competition,to be different and to be good at something and maybe not so good at a different thing. In Jonas's community there are no choices because the elders were affraid that people would make the wrong choices and in many ways they are right. Many people in our community do make the wrong choices but also from that, we learn. I think that if we had "Sameness" things would be too same. Also many ways we describe different objects is through color and with color there is beauty. If we had "sameness" there is no color, no beauty. With our community i think we would have different adveantages and different disadvantages. One advantage may be if we had "sameness" maybe people would hurt others so much or have physical fights that sometimes lead to death. A disadvantage may be that life may not be quite as interesting, if we were all the same and went through advances through life and had the same daily routine as everyone else we would never get the chance to do something we really enjoy.

  23. If everyone is to experience "sameness" why is the reciever so different? And why does the reciever get to hold all the glory and tragedy from the past and whithstand all the pain and suffering when if they didnt use sameness in the past why must they hold on to all the differences in the memories and not be able to experience them? Are they ment so someone will have the "will power" to find an Elsewhere? If an Elsewhere actually exists?

  24. I think "sameness" would be good because there would be safety all around you. Although, I personally wouldn't want "sameness" because you couldn't have much fun in life. There would be no colors, no risk, and no sense of accomplishment. I think the bad things about sameness overcome the positives.

  25. I agree with Luiza, sameness can be good and bad, but it's not sameness that makes us special and have things in common with others, it's being unique and differences. Our differences are what make it fun to be around other people, you get to find out what other people like to do other than what you have in common and that makes it interesting and fun to find out new things. But sameness makes us feel less insecure about our flaws, but realizing our flaws is what makes us grow as people. I don't think sameness is a good idea in contemporary communities.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I believe that sameness would not help our communities because the differences in people are what create ideas, adventures and make life interesting. This country was founded on freedom and choices. If you could never make your own choices you could never make a difference. It is not worth losing diversity to have everyone and everything the same.

  27. I agree with Jenna A. But I also think that sameness would help in some ways like arguments. But I still think that having no sameness is better than having sameness.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I disagree with Abby M. Sometimes you need to do the wrong things to make things right again or help someone. It can be as small of a gesture as when Jonas gave away a memory to Gabe when he couldn't sleep.

  29. I really would hate sameness. Then the world would lose its personality and uniqueness it has today. There could be some benefit for it but for most part i wouldn't like it. If everyone is the same what fun is that?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with Ashley that up intil 12 everyone goes through sameness. I mean why does only one person in the city get the greatness of being different I bet more than one person every like 20 years would be able to see through the sameness.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with Jackie Rose W. I agree with her because if everyone was the same, even if they saw color, the world would still seem like it was black and white. You couldn't have your own taste in clothes, shoes, or anything else. Imagine going to school, and having EVERYONE, be wearing the same shirt as you, the same hair, and the same shoes. How boring would that be? I think that I would really dislike sameness.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I dont think sameness would leave you time to accomplish things of your own. You wouldnt be an individual and you have limited time to yourself. Sameness would be really boring especially if the whole community was the same. I cant imagine living in a world that is same, and colorless.

  33. I agree with Kyra, i would hate the same thing every day and it wouldnt be fun at all because everyone else is the same. No color, no personality, and no free time is boring.

  34. Sameness in our society would potentially eliminate racial issues and poverty. Everyone in our society would have an equal education, quality of healthcare, pay, and opportunity to succeed. It would eliminate pain and suffering of man kind. If there was sameness the Holocaust would have never happened and Rosa Parks would be free to sit anywhere on the bus she liked. The class system that has been in our society since the world began would be eliminated.

I don't think it would be worth losing your diversity because everyone needs to have that little uniqueness in them that makes them special. That part of you that makes you who you are, the one thing that sets you apart from everyone else. If we didn't have diversity how would inventions, music, and art ever be discovered? People discovered many different things because they were different and had different ideas from the "regular" person. If there was no diversity in the world our society would potentially be robotic.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Jenna A. I think that it is a good thing that people are different from one another and it makes the world a more interesting place to live. People make different choices for themselves, therefore it makes them unique. If we lived in a world of "sameness" then nobody could make decisions for themselves and life would be boring.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sameness would be a great advantage in our society, but it would take away from all creativity in the world. With Sameness, we wouldn't have pain, war, sadness or discrimination. There are downsides to Samness, too. The world would be so boring and ordinary, and nobody would get to experience all the great things in this world.

  37. I agree with Sayed and Courtney R. competition does bring the best out of people but it can also bring the worst out too. Competition motivates people to push hard and give it there all but it also makes people fight and turn on eachother. Losing competition would be both good and bad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with Halle B, because sameness would be boring, and you wouldn't have any time for yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Courtney R because, Sameness does have its benefits but, i believe the whole reason sameness was put into the book was to tell the reader to accept themselves for who they are.

  40. In a world where everything is the same there would be few beinfeits like no compatition or sevre storms. But there would also be disadventiges like seeing no color and eating the same meals everyday. Sameness would compeletely screw up our society
because there would be very few population and we would have enogh food for everyone to surrive.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with Lindsey F. because if you wanted to pursue your dream then you might get held back by not being able to see in color or having your job chosen for you.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Hallie B. because sameness would be very boring and lifeless. Life should be creative and exciting. sameness is something that I could live without because excitment and happiness are very important in life. But, not everything in life will be exciting nor will eveything make you happy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe that a little "sameness" would be good for our society. But if everything was "sameness" then what would be art? Where would the fun be? The travel, creativity, music and landscapes, what would they be? Would you sacrifice love for pain?
