I think it exists so that the people don't have to remember what it was to have wars and other painful things. Then only one person has to suffer the pain and not a whole community. I think the Receiver of memories should only receive the painful memories and let everyone keep and cherish the warm and happy memories.
So that the past is not completely forgotten. Someone must remember. If no one remembers, then who would know how the community Jonas lives in got to the point it is at now. If nobody knew, then who would keep the community from getting thrown back into turmoil?
I think the reson the recever of memory exists for many reasons. One, the one said in the Giver, is to advise the Elders. another odvious one is to retain pain and other memorys that inturupt the Sameness. Also, he is neded for thoes who "See beyond" and they don't (back to this again) destroy Sameness.
In Jonas's community nobody has any idea of what the past was like. It is better for them to have no wanting or desire for the past. Their world is perfect, but if anything different happens they wouldn't know what to do. They would be scared and go crazy. That is what the Receiver of Memory is for. To assist the community in times of danger and to keep the community in its perfect routine.
I think that the reason only one person in the story has the memories is so that only one person knows about fear, hunger and pain. This way people aren't afraid of bad things happening that happened in the past. People also won't have fear and will always know that they will be cared for and they won't die of horrible causes.
I think they made the reciever of memory so the people in the community don't have to suffer from the pain of war, broken legs, and lonlines. they made the recciever of memory so they do not have to feel pain.
Miranda P I think the reason why the Receiver exists is so the community doesn't have to hold the burden of being pained by all that has happened before and so they can forget about it completely.
Sydney S. I agree with Miranda. I do think the Receiver of memory exists just to lift the comunity of the bruden of holding the memorys of loss, pain, and death. I also think the Receiver exists so people dont know what they are losing by living in the comunity.
I think the receiver exists because he or she would have the wisdom to answer questions about subjects that others don't have any experience with. I also agree with the others in the fact that everyone in the community doesn't have to feel pain but then again, they still gave up the good memories.
Responding to Miranda, I also agree that the Receiver was created so that citizens didn't have to feel that pain. Another reason I think the Receiver of Memory exsists is because he's the one who can learn about the world so he can make their society a better and more convenient place to live.
I agree with Keegan that the receiver is used so that the people don't have to remember the painful things but disagree over the people being allowed to keep the cherish memories. If you would to keep those memories fights over cherished items could lead to war.
I agree with Courtney, that the Receiver of Memory exists so that not everybody needs to experience fear, hunger, and pain. If everyone had all of the memories of the past, they would always be afraid of bad events occurring, like war. The sameness in their society keeps everyone happy. I also think that the Receiver of Memory exists so that the memories of the past never fade or disappear.
I think that the Receiver of Memory exists to hold the memories of bad and some good things that did not exist anymore. I also think that the Receiver exists to make sure that no information is lost. if all the members of the community had the memories of war, starvation, disease, and many other bad things, the whole community would be afraid and in chaos.
I think the Receiver exists so that someone in the community can have an opportunity to know about the past and how hurtful but also marvelous it really was. If no one knew anything about the past I think too many people would take too much time thinking and over analyzing possibilities of the past. Things that could be much, much worse than it truly was. Just like today some have more active imaginations than others so it's really dependent on the person and their own personal past which could lead them to believe certain things easier than others.
I some-what agree with Keegan. The only thing I disagree with is that only one person should have all the bad memories. Then being selected as the reciever could be considered a punishment. I think that everyone should just keep their own memories too them selves.
I think the Giver exists so that the people do not have to remember all the terrible things in life. The Giver protects people from war, death and pain. But the Giver also protects the people from good things that they don't have in their town such as love. The community has never felt love. I think that the Elders wanted to protect people from love so that everyone would be exactly the same.
He (or she) exists because the society was to afraid to totally forget about their history. So they picked one person to know about it. They also picked that person to carry the burden of pain,sorrow...death because they didnt want to feel that.
I agree with Keegan B. I think they only have the Recevier of Memory is so that the people in Jonas's community dont have to suffer and have pain in their memories. So that everyone can have a perfect lives with only happy memories.
Lara S. I think they want to have a Receiver of Memory because they want to let go of the past but not completly. Someone must have all the memories because then they can give advice. They need someone who has memories and knows what happens when things go wrong. They know what to do when things go wrong.
I think they have a Reciever of Memory because they dont want the people of the community to have to suffer through the pain and miss all of the glory and beauty of all the memories. Also I think they want to keep the people safe and not have them want to go off and try to find an "Elsewhere".
I think that if even the society felt the ignorance of the past is a benefit to the citizens, they have a giver because of the many mistakes that happened throughout history and didn't want them to happen again. Such as when the plane flew over, they were ready to shoot it down, without the memory's of the pain and suffering of similar past mistakes many could have died.
I think they have a Receiver of Memory so that the people of the community don't realize why they are there. The people don't have to know what existed before they came to be in their community. Also, I think that even if the people got to have memories they should not just have the good but also the bad to warn them that live outside the community is not easy.
The Reciever of memory (ROM) is there to take the fall for the community by taking away the pain and making sameness possible so they could live in a place where people couldn't go hey I have red hair or oh I'm a blonde! That's the ROM exists but, as a downfall the community never gets to experience the true pleasures of life.
I agree with Connor in a certain way because being the reciever has its perks but those are pretty much cover-ups for the jail cell it really is because the you can't sign-up for release and you can not have any painkillers or relief pills of any kind, and you get syphoned of from your friends and family and have to spend your time with the giver.
I think that Receiver of Memory exists because the past is an important part in planning the future. Someone needs to know what has happened in the past so that they can apply what they learned to the present time.
I think that the Receiver of Memory exists because the past is important. Even though the community ignores the past and it seems to be a benefit for them, they need to have someone to know about the past just in case they come across a problem in the future. It is good for someone in the community to know about the past because the past can be an important part of the future. Also, the people of the community use the Receiver of Memory's knowledge and wisdom when they have a problem. He is very important in their community and a very trustworthy person.
I think that the reciver of memory exists because when some thing incredibley important came up where the city would need the recivers memories like when rosemary killed herself all her memories were set free the city didn't know what to do. The reciver's other reson of existance is to house all normal human feelings.
I sagree with Courtney about only one person knowing about the past so others don't have to fear everyday. So they know someone cares about them everyday.I also think it's to have one wise person in the community.Someone they can go to for their problems.Scarlet H.
The receiver of memory exists because if they ever need to remember things they need a way to access them. The community doesn't need to know about the memories but they still shouldn't be forgotten.
The Receiver of Memory exists to lift the burden of feelings off of others. The community relies on the Receiver to keep those memories and take away the emotional pain and or elation. The community carefully chooses a new Receiver when the time comes. When Jonas takes on the job, he learns he has to be brave, smart, and able to see beyond what is normal.
Kelli U. I think that the Receiver of Memory exists so that the community won't have to remember all the bad things that have happened in the past. The community relies on the Receiver of Memory to take away all the pain and hurt that the people before them have gone through. I also think that that the Receiver is there so that the memories are not completely lost. The Reciever of Memory is a trustworthy person that the community can go to if their is a problem or issue that needs to be dealt with.
I agree 100% with Brady A. The Reciever of Memory is there to help the community when they need him. The community doesn't need to know about it's past it's missing out on. also, they need somebody to store the information.
