The Giver (7)

Safety is something at the forefront of many conversations today in our society. The people in Jonas' community gave up their freedom and individuality to live in a safe environment. Discuss whether or not the community is a safe environment in which to live. How would you define what a safe environment is? Think about our world as well as Jonas's world.

  1. Personally, I think Jonas's world is too safe. There is no more color in the world! No idividuallity! No freedom! What kind of a world is that?!? Why is history forbidden?!? The only thing good about this safety is that there is no war. There is peace in their community.
A safe environment is where you feel most comfortable, a place where you have nothing to hide and where you feel safe. Although there are many differences in Jonas's world and our world there are many similarities as well. For instance Jonas has bikes and houses and all the 'normal' things you would se in your house just as his.

  2. Safety in our world is a huge issue. There is war, thieves, and killers. In Jonas's world, those things are not an issue. There is peace and nobody is in danger, but in our world, everyone is different. We make sure we are cautious, so we are temporarily safe.
We can enjoy life to its full extent, we see colors, we hear music, and we love. Why should we lose all of this, just for safety?

  3. I think their community is safe. But I think, like Taylor, there needs to be more individuality in their community. Their community is a little twisted in that they never tell anyone about what being released really means.
I think a safe community is one where you can be yourself but still have some limits. But not like Jonas's world because say another community went into war with them they would not be prepared and most likely lose. So really is their community safe as they say it is?

  4. I agree with Jamie. Why would you give up your life when you have all the world has to offer? For safety? The world wasn't made to be perfect. I feel safe when I'm with my family. Your mom, Dad, brother, sister, or enven your dog are the ones you need. Safety is not what life is about.

  5. Jonas' community is very safe place because there is nothing unique about it. But when you know how to be safe, and know how to take caution, it wouldn't be worth giving up a world of unique people, and creativity, and color.

  6. I agree with Jamie we are pretty safe most of the time. I do not think anybody would give up love, color, or freedom just to be safe.

  7. I agree with Lexy the community that Jonas's society lives in is a safe environment. To me a safe environment is a place where people can feel comfortable with the place they're living in. But is giving up all feelings for a safer life really worth it? Personally I don't think so, our society today controls their feelings and uses them to benefit our society. Sometimes it's ok to have some risks in life.

  8. I agree with Jamie. You shouldn't give up some of lifes best things for safety. And because the people in Jonas's community did they will never experience love or laughter. They won't even see life's colors.
Though they won't experience either. Even though we're never save where ever we are, should make us give up up some of greatest things.Scarlet H.

  9. I would not give up freedom, color, music, love, and individuality for safety. We are safe at home and at school from thieves and murderers. Many things in Jonas' world are like ours like the same jobs, tools, and houses. I think that his community would do better with the freedom that we get in our world.

  10. I agree with Jamie. I wouldn't want to give up love, color, music, and individuality for safety. Ok, we are not always safe. But that doesn't mean you give up everything that is important in life.

  11. The community is a very safe inviornment. There are no robbers no war no bullys its ommpleatly safe. The definition for safe for me is a place were i would never get hert in any way what so ever and thats exactly what Jonases comunity is like.

  12. I agree with Kate. A main goal in our society is to remain safe. A lot of people say that you can never be too safe. But in "The Giver" they are so safe that they lose all of their uniqueness. They lose a main importance in life. Although we live in a world of danger, we know that we have the love and hope of all the people around us. When they lost danger they also lost love. A worlds not safe without love. Its not worth it to lose love and uniqueness for "safe" world.

  13. If safety means no killing, stealing, or pain then it is safe. But I believe when you take away rights and give all the power to one group of people bad things can happen. Is not knowing safety?

  14. Safety is essential in all of our communities. Why sacrifice so much for the safety of a communities? I agree with Jamie. Being worried causes you to sacrifice everything you once had just to ensure your safety. Even though it is essential, there are more important things than safety. I think Jonas has a better chance with freedom in his community.

  15. I agree with Jamie but i also agree with Taylor, Yes safety is a big issue in the world and there's nothing we can do to stop it, but not being able to see color or love or be your own person isn't going to stop the terror. I agree with Taylor because it is very unfair that you are not allowed to marry who you want, apply for the job you want, just because that subject is what you were interested in school doesn't mean you don't want to experiment with other jobs too! Jonases world is way to overprotective!

  16. The environment Jonas lives in is (i think Taylor is right) too safe. I think our world could use more safety, but we don't need as much as Jonas does. If your always safe though, life really isn't that much fun. A safe environment changes for different people. For example some people are overprotective, and some people don't care. So safety is different for many people.

  17. I think Jonas's society is the right amount of safe. Except for forbidding history. I think a safe environment is where the government does not keep anything from the people. Also a concealed amount of weapons for hunting, and a strong government to keep people controlled.

  18. I agree with what suriya about how Jonas' world would be better if it was more like ours but not every thing in our world should be the same in Jonas'. I also agree with suriya about how they gave up all thats special about life just for saftey. I'm just glad that I live in a world where I actully get a choice about anything I say or do.

  19. I think a safe environment is when there is no crime and everyone thinks before they make a decision. I think that they made it to safe in Jonas' world because they didn't let the people make their own decisions. Not even what their job was. I think that if the people in Jonas' world are too safe but they don't know it because they were never free so they don't realize that they're living in an overly safe environment.

  20. I think Jonas's community is extremely safe because a long time ago they took out things like animals, hills, and colors. They also have all of those rules so they dont act out.

  21. I agree with Taylor. It doesnt seem like much of a world. Everything is "safe". i think it is too safe. the only way to make it more safe is removing doors and bikes. They dont even have a personality let alone feelings. Safe is where you are most comfortable and content, not where you cant hurt yourself.

  22. Jonas's wold is veery safe but it is also boring. They don't have color and you wouldn't find one thing wrong wih his community. Also no one would have a unique personality, even though they have different jobs, their lives are still pretty much the same. Where as in our communities we all have different jobs, lives, families, personalities, and so much more.

  23. I also agree with Taylor that Jonas's world is too safe. I believe that the world we live in, depending on where you live, is very safe. Yes, their may be war, violence, thieves and many more but in our world we are able to be unique and be ourselves. We have people who are taught to protect us but in The Giver, no one needs to learn how to protect other people. I think that a world as safe as the one that Jonas lives is boring.

  24. I agree with Taylor and Jackie, I wouldn't want to give up my freedom, and individuality. Because we are all unique and that's makes us special!
